BY GABRIELLE WAHJOSOEDIBJOCold water immersion (CWI) has become an increasingly popular method of athletic recovery in the past decade. Nearly all high schools and universities have ice baths to reduce soreness in their athletes after practices or games. However, its increasing popularity has led many to question whether or not it is actually effective. Proponents of CWI claim that ice slows circulation and blood flow, thus relieving swelling, pain, and inflammation after acute exercise. While ice can help muscle recovery, science that supports CWI as a valid method of recovery is virtually nonexistent. Studies on the practice have highlighted its lack of effects rather than its benefits.
BY Aaron BhattachanNeurocysticercosis (NCC) is the most prevalent parasitic disease affecting the central nervous system and is a leading contributor to the increase of epilepsy within developing countries. As a result of mass immigration to the United States, NCC has become an incredibly relevant dilemma that is too large to ignore. With 50 million people infected worldwide, it is apparent that analyzing NCC’s implications on society is not only a health-conscious decision but also a necessary one that is fundamental for all people to understand.
BY Anya GandavadiAs of March 29, all adults in Texas will be eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, almost exactly one year after the first lockdown was initiated in the United States of America. “Before the COVID-19 pandemic, getting a new vaccine from concept to approval could take 10 years and billions of dollars.” So how was the COVID-19 vaccine developed so quickly? For two main reasons. 1. Much of the red tape has been cut away, and 2. There has been worldwide collaboration unlike never before. Pharmaceutical companies have been “getting a boost from Operation Warp Speed, a collaboration between the pharmaceutical industry and the federal government. To offset the cost of the development of the COVID-19 vaccine and to help mobilize approved vaccines as quickly as possible to the American public, the government established nearly $10 billion in federal funds. This has greatly accelerated the timeline for the development of vaccines through clinical trials, FDA review and mass distribution of a vaccine.” With a combination of existing vaccine technology and newer mRNA technology, and with scientists from all over the world working on the vaccine, one can be assured that these vaccines are safe and valuable although they were developed rapidly.
by Emily WallsWhile we aren’t being visited by alien spaceships or building technology that can launch us across the universe, some of the scenes in Netflix’s series “Lost in Space” are strikingly similar to scenes on Earth in recent years. The science behind the TV show illustrates that we need to change the way we treat the planet, or we too, will be Lost In Space.

BY Chelsea SunWhen Covid-19 first emerged in the world, there was talk of 2 distinct variants -- one that would only cause minor to none symptoms in the host and another that would cause more severe, and even deadly symptoms. But now a year after the novel Coronavirus first took the world by storm, many more variants of Covid-19 have appeared.
BY Kenan Atakishiyev Spanning across 11 countries in the Sahel region of Africa, the undertaking known as the Great Green Wall was envisioned in the global arena in 2005 and it soon gained ground in international organizations. In 2007, the African Union authorized the initiative and the countries to which it applied signed the documents affirming their commitment to build a wall against desertification. More specifically, the plan initially started centered around planting and growing a forest composed of millions of trees and other vegetation to create an 8.000km long and 15km wide barrier across the Sahel. However, some experts now think that the Great Green Wall has failed to take root.
BY Grace Gregg The Black Death was the devastating global epidemic of the bubonic plague—named after the swollen lymph nodes, called buboes, where the bacteria Yersinia Pestis begins to multiply. Buboes typically begin to form at the site bacteria first entered the human body (via an infected flea).
By Kylie McDanielAcute myeloid leukemia (AML) is an aggressive excess growth of immature white blood cells, or myeloblasts, within the bone marrow and blood. Due to rapid duplication of myeloblasts, the chances of metastasis, or the spread of cancer to other tissues, is significantly higher if not treated promptly (National Cancer Institute).
