BY Anya GandavadiHow does the COVID-19 vaccine actually work?
There’s been a lot of talk about a vaccine for COVID-19 recently, it seems as if it is the only way to get back to normal, or “the light at the end of the tunnel.” As cases continue to rise all over the world, we’ve seen many countries such as the UK approve vaccines and seen names like Pfizer and Moderna on the news. But what does this vaccine actually do to us, and why is it different than anything we’ve ever seen before?

By Samitha Nemirajaiah Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is the most commonly occurring chronic blood-borne infection. Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the Hepatitis C virus. More than 170 million people worldwide have HCV, and, in the United States, more than three million people are infected. HCV is the response for the majority of liver transplants. More than 15,000 people die annually in the United States because of HCV.
BY Grace gregg“Two hours after admission they have the mahogany spots over the cheek bones, and a few hours later you can begin to see the cyanosis extending from their ears and spreading all over the face, until it is hard to distinguish the coloured men from the white. It is only a matter of a few hours then until death comes, and it is simply a struggle for air until they suffocate. It is horrible.” Physician N. Roy Grist, 1918
BY Derek ChenFrom the famous Trench Run in A New Hope to the Battle of Exegol in The Rise of Skywalker, sound has played a prominent part in the popular space sci-fi franchise, with blaster fire and the roar of engines serving as some of the iconic sound effects that intensify every space battle there is. However, the possibility of this is low, simply due to how sound and space work. As Julie Turnock, assistant professor of media and cinema studies at the University of Illinois, points out, while the sounds of the first film were “nothing like seen before”, the scientific accuracy was “not there.”
BY Huda BirkdarWe’ve all craved that specific desert such as cake, cupcakes, or even ice cream and may have finished the entire thing in just one sitting... While we’re usually caught up in the moment due to the serotonin and satisfaction that this specific desert brings us, we disregard and ignore the negative effects that may originate on our bodies in the future. No, not that small stomach ache or sleepiness but rather real disorders and behavioral issues such as aggression, impulsiveness, and depression.
BY Kailey bickelApproximately 6 year ago, a massive underwater heat wave emerged in the west coast. “The Blob”, as it was named, expanded from the Northern edges of Alaska and Russia, all the way down to below California. This marine heat wave consists of a seven degree average temperature rising along the surface of the ocean: causing multitudes of underwater animals to die in the cross-fire.
By Samitha NemirajaiahCystic fibrosis is a progressive, debilitating monogenic genetic disorder, affecting 1 in 3000 births. Cystic fibrosis is caused by a mutation in the CFTR protein (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator). Cystic fibrosis has no cure, but in the last decade, there has been a breakthrough in drug development by Vertex pharmaceuticals, resulting in the drug Trikafta. Trikafta is not a gene replacement therapy, but it does target the gene mutations, unlike the current medications that just treat the symptoms.
BY Anya GandavadiScientists, researchers, astronomers and physicists together have speculated about life outside of the blue planet for decades. Chances are we’re not alone...right? Many of may have recently heard about researchers’ discovery of signs of life on Venus. Temperatures on Venus average to be the highest in our solar system at around 880 degrees Fahrenheit. Generally, surface temperatures of planets decrease as the distance from the sun increases, however, Venus is an exception because it has a dense atmosphere of greenhouse gases that trap heat to the surface of the planet. The atmosphere is filled with formaldehyde dust and it rains acid. The pressure is approximately 90 times that of earth’s and would be bone-crushing to anything that lived here. By all logic, Venus should not be able to support life.
BY Rolf RydahlThis Breakthrough Could Lead to Improved Safety of Cancer-Killing CAR T Cells Through a new device, scientists have been able to identify specific cells which need to be targeted despite them looking nearly identical to neighboring cells. This can help them treat diseased cells, for example, which may only have changed subtly from their original structure -- this being a major cause for concern when trying to safely treat this type of disease.
